Youth Protection training is designed to teach volunteer leaders how to provide a safe environment in which Scouting activities can take place. The Boy Scouts of America has adopted a number of policies aimed at eliminating opportunities for abuse within the Scouting program. These policies focus on leadership selection and on placing barriers to abuse within the program. This course teaches leaders those policies.
The course also teaches leaders how to protect youth against abuse, how to recognize the signs of abuse and what to do if a leader suspects abuse is taking place. In addition, Youth Protection training teaches leaders to make sure Scouts have the proper safety equipment and training before taking part in activities.
The Youth Protection video and training packet is available to check out from the Council office. Contact your District Executive or check out the videos at the Trading Post. Youth Protection is also available online by clicking on the link below.

Climb On Safely - BSA's Guide to Unit Climbing and Rappelling
National Youth Leader Training
Registration: For application forms and other NYLT information, please click on the links below. The Central Minnesota Council NYLT will be a six-day course delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. The six-day course parallels the program month of the troop. The Scoutmaster models his role in delivering that program in an adult-led, boy-run troop.
The new NYLT syllabus integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. The first three full days of the course represent the first three weeks of a troop calendar, complete with patrol leaders’ council meetings, troop meetings, patrol meetings, and planning for a big troop event. Participants learn valuable skills that they can use when they return to their home troops.
We invite interested participants, youth staff and adult staff to complete applications. Participants will be required to obtain their Scoutmasters approval of their applications and all council Scoutmasters are encouraged to consider nominating at least two boys as participants. Staff selections will be actively recruited from the entire Central Minnesota Council. Scoutmasters should encourage all eligible scouts for staff positions.
Participants must be: 13 years of age, and have completed seventh grade, and must be at least a First Class Scout.
Youth Staff must be: at least 14 years of age, have held the position of patrol leader or senior patrol leader in their own troop, and ideally, have been a NYLT course participant.
Scoutmaster and at least two Assistant Scoutmasters should have the same qualities of leadership as any good troop Scoutmaster. The course Scoutmaster should have had recent experience as the Scoutmaster of a troop and should be familiar with council programs. The basic purpose of the NYLT course is to teach leadership skills. The course Scoutmaster should have completed a Wood Badge Course, ideally Wood Badge for the 21st Century.
Adult volunteer staff are those persons who wish to give of their time and talents to this very rewarding program. Quartermaster, scout skill instructors, GPS course guide, and cooks are needed during staff training and during the summer program week. Any portion of your time is appreciated.
Please take the time to consider your involvement with this tremendously valuable program for our future youth leaders! For questions contact John Hardman, NYLT Course Director, at jhardman@charter.net, or 320-251-7472, or Paul Ravenberg, Professional Staff Advisor, paul@bsacmc.org or 320-251-3930 ext 115.
